February Cumulative Updates for NAV

Today, Microsoft has been released a new Cumulative Updates for the following NAV versions:

You can download all of these Cumulative Updates from the previous links. Of course, as we already expected, the most platform and application hotfixes are intended for the newer NAV versions. For example, NAV 2013 has only one Application hotfix and two Platform hotfixes; and few local hotfixes as well. NAV 2013 R2 has some more Application and Platform hotfixes, but there are still just few.

  • NAV 2016 and NAV 2015 again have some common hotfixes as:
  • Ways to split Sync-NAVTenant into multiple transactions
  • The Dynamics NAV client crashes if you filter on @*
  • You cannot copy a company to another tenant
  • Cannot export to Excel from the web client if the relevant page has the SourceTableTemporary property set to Yes
  • Invoke-NAVCodeunit always runs in the Dynamics NAV client time zone

There are a lot of interesting hotfixes and you can see all details on previous links.

Power BI is a Global BI Leader

One of the great new features in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016 is natively working with Power BI. You can use this feature very easy using OData web service in NAV and copying this URL to Power BI when you try to use it. You just need to choose to import your content pack from Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

PowerBI_Content.jpg

Because of that, I want to write few words about this solution. This BI tool is not only for Microsoft Dynamics NAV, of course. You can use Power BI with i.e. other Dynamics product or with almost every database you want. This is is really powerful and modern tool for analyzing and visualization your data. And everyday is better and better. You can find a lot information about this product here and I don’t want to write about functionalities.

I’ve just wanted to show how other people outside Microsoft see this product. Gartner organized a huge survey about BI products and we can see this results in famous Gartner Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms. You can see that Gartner has positioned Microsoft as a Leader in this area. Microsoft is a leader for the ninth consecutive year, but for the first time, Microsoft is placed furthest in vision within the Leaders quadrant.

It means we can expect more and more capabilities and new benefits of this solution. Well done Microsoft.

Posting Groups #27 – Deferrals in Sales

Few days ago I’ve published how you can use Posting Groups in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016 when you have purchase where you use Deferrals. Now, I want to show you how it looks like when you use Deferrals in sales process. In my old post, you can find everything about using Posting Groups in standard sales process. Now, I’ll show difference. One of the main difference is that system doesn’t use inventory posting groups when posts sales invoice (the same as in purchase scenario).

In the following chart, you can understand how system uses Posting Groups when we have deferrals on Sales document:

SalDefChart.jpg

When we post document and get Posted Sales Invoice, we will get the following G/L Entries. You can find completely description of them in the next table:

SalDefEntries.jpg

When you use Items and Resources, system will use Sales Account from General Posting Setup, but if you use G/L Account in the sales line, system will use this G/L Account you typed.

You can notice that we have more line amounts. Number of lines is based on number of period defined in Deferral Template. For each period, we have two lines (positive and negative). We have always first period lines, but other period lines are behind all entries, because they have not the same posting date. Their posting date is based on setup in Deferral Template.

And I’ve forgot one things in the last post. If you want to see all lines using Navigate, you have to delete Posting Date in Navigate page or if you didn’t it, you have to delete Posting Date from filters in General Ledger Entry.

Posting Groups #26 – Deferrals in Purchase

Last year I had a series of articles about using Posting Groups in Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Now, I want to continue with some small updates.

I already wrote about using Posting Groups in purchasing process, but now I want to add a model when we use Deferrals (a very nice new feature in NAV 2016). In this case, we have some differences compared with a standard posting. System will use some different rules about Posting Groups (you can check standard purchase posting model here). In the following chart, you can understand how system uses Posting Groups when we have deferrals on Purchase document:

When we post document and get purchase posted invoice, we will get the following G/L Entries. You can find completely description of them in the next table:

You can notice that we have more line amounts. Number of lines is based on number of period defined in Deferral Template. For each period, we have two lines (positive and negative). We have always first period lines, but other period lines are behind all entries, because they have not the same posting date. Their posting date is based on setup in Deferral Template.

Events in NAV 2016

Eventing is one of the most important new features in NAV 2016. We can use them to design the application to react to specific actions and to enable separating customized functionality from the application business logic. By default, in NAV 2016 system uses Events for workflow and Microsoft Dynamics CRM integration, but we are not limited only on these.

In this article, I want to refer you to many different videos and blogs made by very experienced people:

Universal App in Phone and Tablet Without Icons

Sometimes, when we install Universal App on our smartphone or tablet (NAV 2016 and NAV 2015 – only for tablets), we can notice one issue with missing Icons (Actions, Images,…). This is not something serious, but it can be unpleasantly.

UnAppNoIcons.png

But, it can be solved very easy. The reason of this issue is because your browser has configured Font download option as disabled.

NoFonts

You can solve this changing this property or adding your site as Trusted. To do this, you need to open your Internet Explorer, run your Microsoft Dynamics NAV web client and open Internet Options. Choose Security tab and choose Sites on the Trusted sites option. Add this sites as trusted and this is solved. Second way is to open Custom level and find Downloads section and change Font download to Enabled.

Now, you can run your Universal App again and everything will be fine:

Bricks in NAV 2016 Phone Client

When we use lists in NAV 2016 Phone Client, we can notice some differences. This difference is based on new Field Group in NAV 2016. We can use a Brick Field Group to optimize space and readability for data that appears in page types such as ListPart, ListPlus, and List. The brick view compresses up to six columns of data and is only displayed when the page is shown on the NAV Phone client.

Picture1

This view has some limitations, for example you cannot delete directly in the list, indentation in repeater controls is not available, factboxes, multi selection, custom sorting, and advanced filtering are not available…

To open the Field Groups window, choose View, and then choose Field Groups. In a table, we can see two Field Groups: DropDown and Brick. If Brick Field Group doesn’t exists, DropDown is interpreted as Brick. Depending on the number of columns that we defined in the Field Group for the Brick, the layout was dynamically change.

The brick layout supports using the Style Property and StyleExpr Property on pages that lets you mark, for example, numbers as favorable or unfavorable.

New NAV Cumulative Updates

In few first days of this year, in January Microsoft has been released a new Cumulative Updates for the following NAV versions:

You can download all of these Cumulative Updates from the previous links. Of course, as we already expected, the most platform and application hotfixes are intended for the newer NAV versions.

One specific platform hotfix is prepared for all four versions – The Dynamics NAV client disconnects when you refresh a sub part.

But few of them are prepared for the last three versions (NAV 2016, NAV 2015 and NAV 2013R2):

  • Bypass license check for development permissions;
  • You cannot remove items from the Home menu of the navigation pane;
  • “Metadata for Query 50000 that is published as a web service is not valid for OData” error message when you use a web service built on a query;
  • Actions in profiles that are controlled by dynamic visibility are hidden incorrectly.

Of course, there are more very interesting hotfixes and news and some of them will be detailed described in next period. For now, just download, install and try.
